I'm wondering how Calvinism has lasted this long. If you're one to believe this theology, help me understand from your viewpoint how it is justified, let alone how it is Biblical and a teaching that is
of God. Anyone who does explain, do not write me a novel.
The following quotes I found
AT THIS SITE are said to have been quoted from Loraine Boettner's book "The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination." They are written by and are therefore, surprisingly, written in favor of Calvinistic thought. These are the first three of the
Five Articles of Calvinism/Predestination.
Article 1 - Total Inability or Total Depravity
"Because of the fall, man is unable of himself to savingly believe the gospel. The sinner is dead, blind, and deaf to the things of God; his heart is deceitful and desperately corrupt. His will is not free, it is in bondage to his evil nature, therefore, he will not--indeed he cannot--choose good over evil in the spiritual realm. Consequently, it takes much more than the Spirit's assistance to bring a sinner to Christ--it takes regeneration by which the Spirit makes the sinner alive and gives him a new nature. Faith is not something man contributes to salvation but is itself a part of God's gift of salvation--it is God's gift to the sinner, not the sinner's gift to God."
Article 2 - Unconditional Election
"God's choice of certain individuals unto salvation before the foundation of the world rested solely in His own sovereign will. His choice of particular sinners was not based on any foreseen response or obedience on their part, such as faith, repentance, etc. On the contrary, God gives faith and repentance to each individual whom He selected. These acts are the result, not the cause of God's choice. Election therefore was not determined by or conditioned upon any virtuous quality or act foreseen in man. Those whom God sovereignly elected He brings through the power of the Spirit to a willing acceptance of Christ. Thus God's choice of the sinner, not the sinner's choice of Christ, is the ultimate cause of salvation."
Article 3 - Limited Atonement or Particular Redemption
"Christ's redeeming work was intended to save the elect only and actually secured salvation for them. His death was a substitutionary endurance of the penalty of sin in the place of certain specified sinners. In addition to putting away the sins of His people, Christ's redemption secured everything necessary for their salvation, including faith which unites them to Him. The gift of faith is infallibly applied by the Spirit to all for whom Christ died, therefore guaranteeing their salvation."My mind reels. The person who believes these claims of predestination claims that Jesus Christ was only intended for the salvation of the elect ones. This makes possible there being a sacrifice of greater value which may be given for the ‘election’ of the whole world. I see no possibility, having identified this claim alone, that a (rational) supporter of Calvinistic thought could hold the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament of higher authority than her or his own moral thinking.
Calvinism suppresses Truth when it is defended. ‘How?’ you ask? It makes God's love out to be something measurable and unfair; and it professes that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to be out of His unconditional love for some and, seemingly, His obligation for accepting others; consequently placing a price tag on the blood of Jesus, as if the value of His life, death, and resurrection is able to be determined.
I can’t help but to share with you the fourth article of Calvinism:
Article 4 - ”In addition to the outward general call to salvation which is made to everyone who hears the gospel, the Holy Spirit extends to the elect a special inward call that inevitably brings them to salvation. The external call (which is made to all without distinction) can be, and often is, rejected; whereas the internal call (which is made only to the elect) cannot be rejected; it always results in conversion. By means of this special call the Spirit irresistibly draws sinners to Christ. He is not limited in His work of applying salvation by man's will, nor is He dependent upon man's cooperation for success. The Spirit graciously causes the elect sinner to cooperate, to believe, to repent, to come freely and willingly to Christ. God's grace, therefore, is invincible; it never fails to result in the salvation of those to whom it is extended.”
I have an extreme problem with the Calvinistic teaching that only the people 'elected' by God are the ones He cares to give salvation from sins – the inclusion of some and exclusion of everyone else is so unlike God. (
“Those whom God sovereignly elected He brings through the power of the Spirit to a willing acceptance of Christ.” “The Spirit graciously causes the elect sinner to cooperate, to believe, to repent, to come freely and willingly to Christ.” DID YOU GET THAT? This states that God forces the willing acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice within each chosen person. So, each elected person is (unwillingly) caused to (willingly) accept the gospel. I.E., God makes all of ‘the elect’ into robots. No matter how this is worded, it just doesn’t work.) Simultaneously, Calvinists profess, “The external call (which is made to all without distinction) can be, and often is, rejected; whereas the internal call (which is made only to the elect) cannot be rejected; it always results in conversion.”
To say that, when God predestined us, His ultimate decision was not altered by His foreknowledge of our obedience or disobedience is absolutely ridiculous. This is to say that God doesn’t love everybody equally, and that He finds creation something of so little value where-in He should play games which ensure the salvation of people at His random choosing. Calvinism is saying that God chose people to force His will upon who otherwise may have been radical Christians or ruthless terrorists alike.
Dude, God is not a respecter of persons. He hasn't elected any of us above another. Most importantly, He deeply and equally loves each and every soul so much that Jesus, God's son, has completed the task which is priceless - unfathomable! He did it for you along with every other person in the world.
